Hearing loop installed at Blackwood Miners’ Institute
Blackwood Miners’ Institute has been fitted with new equipment so people with hearing problems can hear shows more clearly. An infrared hearing loop system has been installed in the institute’s main auditorium which helps deaf people who use a hearing aid as it cuts out any background noise. |

Tesco fined almost £10,000 for Ystrad Mynach lift accident
Supermarket firm Tesco has been fined almost £10,000 by magistrates for breaching health and safety laws. Abertillery Magistrates’ Court fined the company a total of £9,600 on August 6. |
Caerphilly GCSE pass rates improve
Overall GCSE results in Caerphilly County Borough have improved this year. Provisional WJEC examination board results for schools in Caerphilly County Borough show an improvement in passes at A* to C grade from 60.8% in 2008 to 61.1% The overall pass rate of 97.9% (grades A* to G) is slightly below last year’s performance, falling by 0.4%. |

Fortnightly bin collections to start in October
Rubbish collections across Caerphilly County Borough are to be reduced to once a fortnight starting in October. From this week a team of “doorstep recycling advisors” will be pounding the streets and knocking on doors telling people about the change. |
