Caerphilly Royal Navy search and rescue paramedic ready to help on New Year’s Eve

A Royal Navy aircrewman and paramedic from Caerphilly will be spending his New Year’s Eve at the UK’s busiest helicopter search and rescue unit.

Bargoed ex-soldier honoured with MBE in New Year’s list

 

An ex-soldier from Bargoed has been awarded an MBE in the New Year’s honours for services to wheelchair rugby.

Phil Davies, 50, started playing rugby at Bargoed RFC as a junior and joined the Royal Welch Fusiliers from school in 1977.

Public urged to have their views on police plan

 

People are being urged to send in their views on Government plans to reform policing.

The Police Reform and Social Responsibility Bill, if passed into law, would scrap police authorities from 2012 and replace them with elected Police and Crime Commissioners, who would hold the police to account on behalf of the public.

Plaid Cymru pledges two-year council tax freeze

 

Councillors on Plaid Cymru-led Caerphilly County Borough Council have pledged to freeze council tax for the next two years.

Councillor Lindsay Whittle, Plaid leader of the council, said: “Council tax is one of the largest items on people’s household budgets and Plaid is very conscious that many people have had their pay frozen or reduced.

Public artwork unveiled in Blackwood

Two new pieces of public artwork have been unveiled in Blackwood town centre.

The first sculpture ‘Workhorses’ by local artist Rubin Eynon has been unveiled on the approach to Blackwood bus station.

Rough Guide author Mike Parker was asked by the Valleys Heart and Soul campaign to create a list of the top 50 Valleys events, places and experiences.

A 24-hour walk-out of train staff on Valley Lines services will be held on Monday.

Staff at Arriva Trains Wales represented by the RMT union are in a dispute over pay and conditions.

Caerphilly’s River of Light lantern parade to go ahead

 

The River of Light lantern parade in Caerphilly this evening will still go ahead despite the poor weather.

The route of the parade however has been changed by Caerphilly County Borough Council.
