Home Insurance and Television Equipment

Published in Features on Tuesday August 30th, 2011

Home insurance can protect you financially if your television set is damaged accidentally. Reputable home insurance providers should also offer financial compensation if your digital receiver, satellite dish or TV aerial is unintentionally damaged in an accident.

Home insurance providers tend to offer cover for entertainment equipment under the section marked Contents Standard Cover in your home insurance policy. Whilst most home insurance firms include your cable, satellite or digital receiver under this section of your home insurance policy, UK home insurance providers offer different levels of cover. If you are unsure of what is included in your home insurance policy, check with your home insurance provider.

Many home insurance providers allow you to download their home insurance policy document online so you can double check that your TV and any related equipment is covered there. Cheap home insurance companies may not offer your home and TV equipment the full level of cover you require.

Over the last forty years, TV has become increasingly popular. In fact according to research done by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), people in Great Britain spend most of their time at home, sleeping, doing housework and watching TV. On average, these three activities take up thirteen hours and thirty-eight minutes of each twenty-four hour day.1

Perhaps it is no wonder then that people tend to invest a lot in this well-used piece of household equipment. However valuable your TV set is, home insurance should be able to cover any accidental damage up to the limit stated in your schedule.

Television’s popularity could also be due to the widespread availability of digital TV, which has made it possible to access an astonishing number of programmes at any time of the day or night.

If you watch satellite TV, you may encounter a problem with your TV aerial or satellite dish. Because these items are out in the open, they can be easily damaged. Flying footballs or passing birds can easily dislodge this crucial piece of satellite equipment. Thankfully most home insurance providers cover aerials and dishes as well as indoor receivers.

However, if your television stops working due to a mechanical or an electrical breakdown then chances are your home insurance won’t be able to cover the repair costs.

Whether you go for a sleek, flat screen television, complete with surround sound and high definition, or stick with the trusty set that you’ve had for years – you should be financially protected from the cost of accidental damage to your TV by your home insurance.
