The action at Newbury was marred by a brawl involving between 30-40 racegoers in and around the main grandstand during racing. One eyewitness reported seeing police in protective clothing arrive at the course in order to separate Those involved were rumoured to have been Cardiff and Swansea football fans who had prearranged a meeting at the track.
There were three arrests and the racecourse managing director, Stephen Higgins, reported three minor casualties. “We haven’t had a police presence at the racecourse for more than six years now, because the police don’t see us as a risk, but our security staff dealt with the situation entirely correctly, cordoning off the area and treating those with minor injuries before the police arrived to escort those involved back to their coaches,” he said.
“The incident lasted about eight minutes and we will be providing our closed circuit television footage to the police. It is obviously very disappointing and distressing for those who witnessed the situation, but it was contained and dealt with as quickly as possible.”
