Forty cars were stopped by police in the Blackwood area on Friday as part of an operation to highlight the work of Special Constables.

The operation was part of National Specials Weekends which celebrates the role of volunteer coppers.

The results from Friday night were:

  • 40 vehicles were stopped.
  • 21 warnings were given for fog lights, seat belts.
  • One persons stopped and checked.
  • One Vehicle Defect Rectification Scheme form given.

The Special Constabulary has been in existence for more than 175 years and constables have the same duties as regular police officers.

Gwent Police Assistant Chief Constable Jeff Farrar is the Special Constabulary lead for the four Welsh forces.

He said: “Officers with the Special Constabulary are greatly appreciated within the police service for the vital and invaluable role they play in supporting regular officers and for the service they provide to residents of their local communities.

“The weekend provided us with an opportunity to show members of the public, who may not be aware of the role they play, exactly what they can do and to raise awareness about what being a special is all about should anyone want to join us.”
