Work is due to begin at Cwmcarn Forest on improvements aimed at attracting more visitors

Work on improvements at the popular Cwmcarn Forest is set to get underway.

The project, funded by the EU and the Welsh Government, includes an extension to the main car park that will almost double the amount of parking spaces, the creation of a new cross county cycle trail, a new downhill cycle trail and an amenity building in the main car park.

Cllr Ron Davies, the council’s cabinet member for regeneration and planning, said: “Over the past year Cwmcarn has already seen some exciting new developments with the introduction of Camping Pods as well as four-star accreditation.

“The new improved and extended car park, together with the new trails and facilities, will really enhance the visitor experience.”

The site attracted nearly 183,000 visitors in 2010, all visiting to enjoy the walking, mountain bike trails and Forest Drive.

Work on phase one of the improvements, the car park extension, is due to begin on September 19 and should be completed before Christmas.

He work should be completed by 2013.

It is lovely to see some improvements at forest drive, just a shame that we are going to have to pay for them when they introduce the car park charges later this year, another “free” attraction taken away from us by the greedy CCBC.
