Caerphilly car parking charges to increase

Friday June 4th, 2010

Car parking charges in Caerphilly County Borough are set to rise to boost the council’s finances.

Councillors are considering a £1.50 charge for drivers using park and ride car parks at railway stations and increasing pay and display fees by up to 30%.

Council officers have said the rises are expected to generate an extra £100,000 over the next year.

Caerphilly County Borough Council has 12 park and ride car parks at railway stations throughout the area which are currently free to use.

If a £1.50 charge is introduced it would generate £50,000 by April next year – set against the £86,000 they cost to operate.

Pay and display car parks could rise from 40p to 50p for an hour, 50p to 70p for two hours and £1.50 to £2 for a day.

Annual tickets at some car parks will rise from £280 to £350 and three-month tickets from £75 to £95.

These increased charges are expected to raise £50,000.

Councillors sitting on Caerphilly’s executive cabinet have been recommended to approve the plans at a meeting on June 8.

I think they got a cheek to put up car parking by 30% this is higher than the cost of living rise. They get enough out of peoples council tax. Cheek I say.

£1.50 for a currently free park and ride?! Add that on to my £5.10 train ticket and the benefits of driving all the way to Cardiff out weigh having to stand on a packed train for 40 mins a day.
