Street Pastors start work in Risca
Risca is the latest place in Caerphilly County Borough to welcome Street Pastors, following on from Blackwood and Caerphilly town.
Street Pastors is a Church-backed initiative which works alongside the police and the council to promote community safety in town centres.
Each volunteer pastor has been trained to help people who maybe vulnerable either through alcohol or drugs.
Risca Neighbourhood Policing Team Inspector Ian Muirhead said: “We welcome the Street Pastors to the ever growing family of volunteers. I want less victims of crime in Risca and I know from the success elsewhere in the Gwent Police area that Street Pastors play an important role in helping achieve this. The Risca Neighbourhood Policing Team are looking forward to working alongside them to make Risca a safer place to visit.”
Cllr Rob Gough, cabinet member for public protection, said: “The Street Pastor scheme has seen overwhelmingly positive results in Blackwood to date, so I am delighted that a similar scheme is being introduced in Caerphilly and Risca.
“I am sure that these dedicated groups of volunteers will complement well the work of the police, council and other local agencies, and I thank them for helping us continue to ensure that the Caerphilly County Borough is a safe and pleasant place to live and visit.”Follow @CaerphillyObsvr
