Move to Ebbw Vale agreed for Cwmcarn High School pupils after asbestos discovery
All of Cwmcarn High School’s 900 pupils are to be moved after the discovery of asbestos.
On Tuesday, councillors at a special meeting to discuss the closure agreed the plan to move pupils to Coleg Gwent’s Ebbw Vale campus temporarily from November 5.
The school was closed down on Friday October 12 after contractors discovered asbestos.
It has since partially re-opened with Years 12 and 13 having returned to the school on Friday October 19 and Year 11 back on Monday 22. Year 10 pupils returned to lessons on Tuesday and the school will be fully re-opened on November 5 after the half-term break at Ebbw Vale.
Following the meeting of full council, Cllr Rhianon Passmore, cabinet member for education, said: “We have been working closely with the school and governing body over the past week to enable the pupils and staff to return to the classroom as quickly as possible.
“I am pleased to announce that the council has agreed a way forward this evening to accommodate the school at the former Ebbw Vale Campus from Monday November 5.
“We have approved almost £1.5million in funding to support the move and this clearly demonstrates our commitment to resolve this issue and reduce the disruption to the school community.
“This addresses the short term needs of the school for the rest of the academic year, but we now need to look to the future and how we resolve the situation in the longer term.”Follow @CaerphillyObsvr
