Bedwas slipped to their eighth successive defeat but victory for Aberavon maintained their push for league honours as they punished Bedwas errors to claim the spoils.
Aberavon started strongly and took the lead from a line out, scrum half David Pritchard exploiting a huge gap in the home defence to cross, Davies adding the extras. Bedwas immediately hit back with a penalty goal by Powell, before Davies extended Aberavon’s lead with a long range penalty goal from just inside the Bedwas half of the field.
Bedwas responded with another Powell penalty before a good move across the field saw Philip Sargent long pass find Kristian Owen who crossed in the corner, Powell converting to put Bedwas 13-10 ahead.
The forwards from both sides continued to tackle hard neither looking to give their opponents an inch.
Both sides’ kickers added further penalties for a half time score of Bedwas 16 Aberavon 13.
Aberavon were soon level with a penalty by Davies after Bedwas were adjudged offside before Powell and Davies exchanged successful penalties to tie the scores.
Bedwas’ attempts to get something from the game were not helped by yellow cards to forwards Lampitt and Pettit in separate incidents, two spells of being down to fourteen men proved costly for Bedwas.
Powell added a further penalty before Aberavon replacement Liam Gadd scored a try, improved upon by Davies. Bedwas tried had to break down the visitors defence but strong defence kept them out.
Aberavon secured the win courtesy of a penalty try, Davies adding the extras but they couldn’t secure the bonus point victory they would have wished for as the game ended but the win keeps Aberavon in second spot in the table.
